如果哪天你的外国同事或客户对你说“We have to talk turkey about the project”,你可千万别想当然地认为他要跟你谈火鸡,那就大错特错了。他其实是要跟你严肃地谈这个项目。“Talk turkey”的意思就是“郑重、严肃、直率地谈某事”。

“Talk turkey”起源于美国。事实上,它最初的意思真的跟谈论火鸡有关。在感恩节的时候,一家人围坐在桌旁,桌子上放着感恩节的传统食物火鸡。大家先是说说火鸡,然后就聊其它开心的事。于是,“talk turkey”就有了“愉快地交谈”的意思。

不过,“talk turkey”现在的意思和“愉快地交谈”差得有点远。有一种猜测是,这层意思是从“cold turkey”那里借来的。“Cold turkey”的意思是“直率地、坦然地”,19世纪的某个时候,它的这层意思被包含到了“talk turkey”中,于是“talk turkey”最终就变成了“严肃谈某事”。
