在美国口语中，“放鸽子”最普遍的用法“stand sb. up”，英文的解释是“to fail to keep a date with.”。例如，你看到有人说好了要去约会, 却垂头丧气地回来了，你就可以问他,，“He stood you up?”（他放你鸽子了？）。放鸽子的另一个说法就是“no-show”。如果他放你鸽子，你就可以说，“He is a no-show.”（他爽约了。）（本句选自《小笨霖英语笔记》）。
